Tourism in Bilbao |
|
Bilbao – the capital of Vizcaya, located in the Basque Country is a wonderful hill filled city situated in the banks of the tidal river, Nervion. Although, originally a very industrialized town, the tourism expanded in the 1990’s, when the Guggenheim Museum was opened. Built to resemble as much as possible the waves of the river and scales of the fish when the sun shines above it, the most part of the museum is just for décor, but rest assured that along side the small permanent collection, the museum has at least one temporary collection on display. Also, just outside the museum, you can find the most famous symbol of today’s Bilbao, the flower puppy, made by Jeff Koons. The Basque Museum is another important edifice you must include in your visiting route, as its primary focus is on the history of Euskadi – Basque motherland – and, of course, ethnography. The Bullfighting Museum, better known as the Museo Taurino is, as advertised, dedicated to the role of bullfighting along the ages. It is built next to an actual bullring. The churches of Bilbao are sight to be seen, as well, most of them of gothic influence. Iglesia de San Anton was built in the 15th century and is featured on Bilbao’s shield. Built by the same architect, Basilica Begona overlooks the city and is one of the most important religious symbol of Bilbao. For a great view, you can take the Artxanda Funicular, or climb the Mallona stairs or walk the seven streets of Casco Viejo. |
