Tourism in Fuerteventura |
|
Fuerteventura – Found in the Atlantic Ocean, this Spanish Island is the second largest, right after Tenerife, of the Canary Islands. Having around 3000 hours of sunlight each year, this is a haven for all beach and sun lovers, as well as a surfing paradise, thanks to the Trade winds that blow all summer and the winter swells of the Atlantic Ocean. The island offers a very special landscape, as the north is made up of sand dunes and the south offers amazing beaches and secluded bays. The always blowing winds make the beaches a perfect place for windsurfing, as well, and all other water related sports. Furteventura offers many interesting sights to be seen, as well as interesting museums, each with its own theme, such as the Salt Museum, the Antigua Windmill Craft Centre and the Atalayita Archeological Interpretation Centre. The open air Sculpture Park that houses almost 100 sculptures is in Puerto del Rosario, the island's capital. The most popular and most celebrated traditional holiday is Carnival, differently themed each year. A Carnival King is chosen after parades and galas. Also, since 2004 there are 2 important festivals that take place to promote local music: Lebrancho Rock – which takes place in the Town Hall of the capital and Fuertemusica – that takes place in El Cotillo, both were founded to promote the local groups, new or otherwise. |
